What is happening in Grade 4?

Currently we are reading a novel called Tale of Despereaux. It is an award winning book about a very small mouse who accomplishes amazing things! We have also been focusing on adding adjectives and adverbs in our writing.

Please stay tuned for information regarding the presentation of our Dinosaur Projects. The students have been researching and creating some amazing posters about their Dinosaurs. During this presentation we will be starting to collect donations towards paying for our field trip to Drumhellar.

THANK-YOU

I just wanted to extend a huge thanks to all the parents who supported our reading program.  The students had a fantastic night in Camrose watching the Kodiaks win!  We will be continuing our reading logs next week with the Oilers and Flames reading programs.

Also, thank-you to those parent who were able to bring in items for our Halloween Party!

Report Cards will be going home next week on Nov. 10.  Please be sure to call and book an interview for Nov. 17th.

Our SMARTBOARD has arrived and the students are very excited.  We have used this new piece of technology for practicing math facts, researching dinosaurs, matching vocabulary, and many other great applications.

Alberta Maps and Terry Fox

The highlight this week was definately making maps of Alberta showcasing the 6 natural regions. These include Canadian Shield, Rocky Mountains, Foothills, Boreal Forest, Parkland and Grassland. We also discussed that this type of project is great for kinesthetic learners, which means hands on learners! We are also concluding our current math unit and moving on to exploring whole numbers.

Our spelling program has started. This is a unique program which allows each student to have a individualized spelling list. Students are able to choose words that are appropriate for their level of spelling and it promotes students to take risks and be challenged. Each Wednesday we will take our weekly spelling quiz and new words will come home.

The Terry Fox Run was on Friday! What a fantastic cause.

Stay tuned for the October Newsletter, which will be coming out very soon.

Writing Rules

In Grade Four we started reading Charlie and the Chocolate factory. The students were definately excited and keep asking when will be reading again next. We also began discussing the traits of writing. The first trait we looked at was ideas. The students then partcipated in an activity called quickwrites. The objective is to write, write, write based on the topic I give them. We completed two and the goal was to try to improve something during your second one. The students came up with some awesome ideas and were extremely motivated to write. Ask them about their invisible skunk!

The Terry Fox run is approaching next week and book orders were sent in!
